spring hanger hydro allowable - 1.5 or 2.0 the rated load ? - 09/19/05 05:45 AM

If a spring hanger is designed as per MSS-SP-58 & 69, what hydrotest load is normally expected to be safely carried by the locked spring hanger ? Will it vary, if the piping is designed as per ASME B 31.1 or B 31.3 ? We consider 1.5 times the rated maximum operating load for spring hanger for B 31.1 & 2.0 for B 31.3, if the vendor does not provide any figure; if the vendor provides a better figure, it make our hydrotesting simpler & we may use less temporary supports than otherwise required.

Hello, SAM:
According to MSS-SP-58 (paragraph 10.1.2 & 10.1.3) both variable and constant spring hangers shall be capable to support up to 2 times the normal operating load.
Some manufacturers guarantee that variable and constant supports with their travel-stops and all their components, shall be capable to withstand an equivalent load in hydrotest of two and half times the operating load.

Sorry, I have forgotten to add something.
I have not found any reference in B31.1 & B31.3 regarding to minimum hydrotest load to accomplish by support device.Only a link to MSS-SP-58.
In my opinion the requirement shall be the same indepently of which of this codes we are using.

Thanks, JMD, for your reply.

From clause 321.1.3 of ASME B 31.3: 2002 edition, I considered that this clause of stresses for pipe supporting elements cover variable and constant effort spring hangers except springs.
