Can someone give me a formula for the disconuity stress due to geometry and metals at the flanges...Many thanks...also their derivation

Two approaches.

The axial compressive load can be computed based on the differential movement between the core and jacket and checked against the Euler's first critical load. This can be done from simple strength of materials concepts.

Second: A detail analysis of the local stress can be found in Paul Voorhaar's website in the article titled " Local stresses by twisting of a circular ring (Timoshenko)".

Ths article is password protected. You have to request Mr. Voorhaar for the password.

Thanks anindya for the info... I have studied the discontinuity stress due to geometry and metals....And found out the continuity will be restored by local bending w/c will be added to the membrane bending stress...(reference: Mechanics of Materials by J.R. Barber)...Is the article by Paul Voorhar free of charge in case I ask him for the password?

Thanks and regards,
