Pressure thrust force in Tied Expansion Joint

Pressure thrust force in Tied Expansion Joint - 05/03/10 03:01 AM

I have hydrostatic test as one load case in the analysis and its pressure as we know 1.5times design pressure. Because of this ,in restraint summary, maximum pressure thrust force shown that belongs to hydrostatic test case.

My requirement is to inform the supplier to take care of this pressure thrust force and therby suitably Tie Rods needs to be designed.

However my query is hydrostatic test to my knowledge usually done at shops and at that time no bellows are installed. If so is the case should I need to ask the supplier to design Tie Rod for the maximum value(belongs to hydrostatic test case) or I could leave that hydrostatic test value and considering the maximum of other load cases Tie Rods Could be Designed.

Kindly clarify the doubt with your opinion and suitable explanation.

B31.3 para. 345.3.3(b) says "Restraint hardware for all types of expansion joints shall be designed for the pressure thrust forces at the test pressure."
That paragraph and Appendix X provide more information on testing the XJ in the shop prior to installation.

I have one more query. I'm using Untied expansion Joint and my requirement is to inform the supplier to take care of this thrust force acting on turbine and suitably turbine needs to be designed with proper foundation bolts. In restraint summary Max force belongs to hydrostatic test case(1.5*design pr).

If so is the case should I need to ask the turbine supplier to take care the maximum value(belongs to hydrostatic test case) in designing the turbine equipment or I could leave that hydrostatic test pressure thrust value and can inform the supplier to take care of the maximum force value of all other load cases.

Kindly clarify my doubt. Expecting ur reply.
