B31.3 Appendix P - 02/08/10 09:23 AM

Hi ,

I would like to know what formula caesar applies to calculate axial stress (for operating )when the Appendix P option is active in the config file .

I am working on Version 5.1 latest build . As an aside , I wonder is there any change with this function in Version 5.2 ?

Thanks .

Equation (P17a) is shown in Appendix P as:
So=SQRT((ABS(Sa)+Sb)^2+4St^2)
where:
Sa=stress due to axial force=(ia)*(Fa)/Ap
Fa=axial force, including that due to internal pressure
ia=axial force stress intensification factor (ia=1 for elbows)
Ap= cross-sectional area of pipe

There is no change to the C2 application of Appendix P in Version 5.20

Thanks for your reply Dave .
Actually I know the code equations , my question was related to how the code equations are threated in Caesar .

Are you implying that C2 does not use the Code equations?

Implying . No . I'm asking a question .

C2 calculates operating stress in accordance with B31.3 Appendix P when the Appendix P option is activated. You will see this value in the "Code Stress" column in the stress output.
I guess you are asking about the values listed under the "Axial Stress" column in the C2 stress output. These stresses will not include any stress intensification factors. These columns (i.e. axial, hoop, bending, torsion stress etc. and the SIFs) are general calculations and omit special code adjustments. I treat them as just that - general calcs - and do not expect the individual columns to sum up to the "Code Stress" column.
You can test C2 results with a simple one pipe job where you juggle SIFs, tensile & compressive loads and pressure.
