high pressure system - 12/17/09 11:00 PM

Our system pressure is 450bar which is above the limit of ANSI 2500# flange rating (430bar for A182 F51). Therefore, we are going to use piping specification prepared as per Stoomwezen (germen code) which is suitable up to 550 bar by using API 6BX flange.

In this case, can I analyse piping system as per Stoomwezen code in Caesar II, or conduct stress as per B31.3 but check flange loading as per API 6B?

Thanks in advance

You don't need to use Stoomwezen. B31.3 does not limit pressure, so do as you suggest, B31.3 + flange moment check.

Thanks for your advise Sir. If we use pipe spec specified as per Stoomwezen, is it not required to use the same piping code for stress analysis? Or, is it good idea to incorporate the pipe spec to B31.3?

You dont have to change the piping design code for high pressure piping.
For pressure > 430bar, additional precautions need to be taken, for which you need to refer Chapter IX - High Pressure Piping (B31.3)

Refer Table-K326.1 - Component standards.
It is permissible to use B16.5 Flanges, provided they meet all the requirements of the Chapter IX.

Hope this helps...

Hi SKK

B16.5 Flange we can use until 2500 pressure rating as stated by B16.5.
Beyond that we need to go for
1)special flange design ( Ex UDHE do that design)
2) Special design Lens ring is used between the flanges
3)There is limitation in force & moment ( Indicated by vendor) in each lense ring
4) High Pressure Piping (B31.3) is ok to use.
