Analysis of Screw Compressor's Piping System - 12/17/09 09:28 PM

Hello Stressers...Does anyone have experience in analyzing piping systems connected to Screw Compressors? I am just curious if a modal analysis is required just like a reciprocating compressor where natural frequency of pipe is 2 to 4 times (rpm/60) where rpm=speed of compressor. Is it necessary and practical also to use hold-down supports? Also, is it required to do a mechanical/acoustical study by a third party? And does anyone have seen in the field where a gas screw compressor pipe have not used hold down support but are running with acceptable vibration?..Thanks a lot in advance for the help..

Cheers,

A screw compressor should cause no more dynamics than, for instance an API 610 pump, so should not require special dynamic precautions. Nozzle loads are very critical however since a small misalignment of the shaft will cause rapid failure.
