Appendix P

Appendix P - 07/01/04 02:58 PM

A question about future Caesar II. I'm reading that the 2004 Edition of B31.3 will include an optional Appendix P for stress analysis that will include things like effects of Axial stress and what sounds like an Operating Stress Allowable.

I'm curious to know what Coades thought's are on how this will be implemented. I envision a check box (like the current "use liberal stress allowable") to trigger the inclusion of axial stress and to check the operating stress against the allowable value that B31.3 will be proposing.

From what I can see, it looks like B31.3 2004 is going to have a big impact on we stress folks and keep the Coade coders very busy.

Yes the next edition of the code will contain a new appendix. This appendix, Appendix P, will contain "alternative rules for evaluating stress range". The intent is to consider stresses at the operating conditions, including both displacement and sustained loads, rather than displacemnts stress ranges only.

Yes we are going to be busy.

It remains to be seen as to the impact that this non-mandatory appendix will have... many factors drove its inception, and COADE does have a participant on this comitee - sub-comittee

But for those people pretending to be competent in the field of piping flexibilty analysis who always gave their ignorance away when analyzing B31.3 piping by asking why CAESAR II didn't give them an operating code stress I guess it will be their lucky day, they will still be ignorant of the code just a bit harder to spot!
