WELD JOINT STRENGTH REDUCTION FACTOR IN CAESAR 5.0 - 11/21/07 11:39 PM

[b]Dear Richard/Brown

in CAESAR II 5.0 VERSION below the thickness box there is option for acticvating SEAMLESS

WHAT EXACT EFFECT IT HAS TO MY STRESS FLEXIBILITY CALCULATION

HOW MUCH THIS FACTOR CAN BE IMPORTANT !!!!

Read this thread also: http://www.coade.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=13195&page=3

And here is the definitive paper by Dr. Charles Becht on this subject: http://www.becht.com/Content.aspx?cid=180&lvl=3

This factor is not applicable for the circumferential joints. But as per

http://www.becht.com/Content.aspx?cid=180&lvl=3

"They apply to longitudinal and spiral weld joints in pressure design, and to circumferential weld joints in evaluation of stresses due to sustained loads, SL. They were added because weldment creep rupture strength has been determined to be lower than base metal creep rupture strength in some circumstances."

Also ASME B31.3 states: "The designer is responsible for the application of weld joint strength reduction factors to welds other than longitudinal and spiral (e.g., circumferential)."

So my question is:"Does C2 apply this factor for circumferential welds, for example at elobw joints or at flanges etc."?

Yes, depending on how the Configuration is setup. Use of this factor is now optional in the Code.

Richard,
Is this option available in C2?

Ignore B31.3 Wc Factor
The circumferential weld strength reduction factor is now an option in B31.1 and B31.3.

Setting this directive to TRUE means that CAESAR II will not apply a weld strength reduction factor. If this directive is set to FALSE, the weld strength reduction factor will be applied at all bends, tees, and reducers for temperatures greater than the starting "creep temperature", as defined in the Code.
