my question is abt meeting a pump nozzle api 2.
normaly which parameters are considered...Design parameters.ie the pipe schedule data's or the
the operating parameters ie the process data..

I ve been asked to qualify the piping to meet under the design conditions...is it normally done

Normally use line design conditions. It really depends upon the company policy for deriving 'design' conditions however. Design values may be close to max operating, or at the other extreme, nothing to do with operating, i.e., based on max temperature and pressure allowed by the pipe spec.

Best to look at the line list normal and max operating values to see whether there are large or too conservative differences compared to design values, then discuss with your process engineer.

Remember that if it is a hot system, it is quite in order to apply the hot Youngs modulus to an equipment load calculation (but NOT for stresses).

Also, if there are significant differences in design and operating pressures it may affect sif values and pressure elongation (if you are applying it).

Well, I'd say not necessarily... I'd say do what is required per code or local jurisdiction (grin).

;-)

In general, I prefer to qualify to design conditions, unless design happens to be completely out of whack.. around here it seems design temp is about 25degF higher than operating... so not a huge issue normally (note if there is a high steam out temperature I don't use that one).

Currently I am involved in a project related to an expansion of an existing upstream facility .
we are in the process of connecting a new pump to an suction and discharge header of an existing pump which lies just adjacent.The exisiting pump nozzles are already vibrating and not really well designed piping.
we have suggested a dampening check valve to save our nozzles(how efective is this).ALso the suction and discharge lines are connected through relief valve lines.

Is there anything in particular to be considered when working on tie in systems?

Also in case of nozzles would there be a problem if the moments are unbalanced?? well all three under the allowables but still not a well balnced configuration.the API check is also ok
