B31J for B31.3-2020 will it be native in CII now - 06/07/21 03:21 AM

ASME B31J is mandatory as of B31.3-2020. CII however still uses the FEATools application to apply B31J SIFS and flexibilities. This is time consuming especially when a lot of modifications are needed to come to acceptable stresses.
Will B31J now be implemented natively in CII now it is mandatory for B31.3?

Re: B31J for B31.3-2020 will it be native in CII now - 06/07/21 07:16 AM

I would think it would have to, since the old typical SIF values used are no longer valid (for latest code systems). Or throw up some warning/statement that the model *MUST* be converted for 2020 ASME B31.3.

Hopefully it'll just be built into the load case processing so you don't have to go to a separate thing like FEATools to run it with B31J values.

Yes, ASME B31J:2017 will be included in the next version of CAESAR II so as to directly support B31.3 and other codes that may require, or optionally allow, its use.

What is the planning on the new CII release with B31.3-2020+B31J?

I am getting clients requiring B31.3-2020, especially because of this change in SIF approach.

c2 Version 13 will incorporate B31J directly into the software.

Corne,
In my understanding, using B31J is a step closer to the goal of B31.3 that piping system will resist 7000 strain (mainly thermal) cycles. I think we fail to explain to our Clients what are the consequences of the temperatures we define for their piping system and never have their feedback about the degree of satisfaction achieved having 7000 cycles confirmation via calculation.

@Richard: I know, see also Mandeeps reply from 06/07/21.
@Mariog: I know what using B31J implies and I am familiar with such discussions with the Clients.

My question however was wat the planning is on the new CII release (version 13). When is version 13 to be expected?

To find the current release date of PPM products, login to the "PPM Smart Community", then from the main page, or other pages, select "Useful Links" and then select "Product Releases Schedule". There it shows a list of the PPM products, including c2 with a Projected Release Date.

This product release information is updated once per quarter and published online to the "PPM Smart Community".

question about B31J in next rev13:

when we have to set a sif we will only choose "welding" (example for a tee) and caesar will automatically calculate sif according to B31J or will we have to open B31J utility by hand, calculate sif and then copy manually in node sif?

c2 will automatically compute the SIF and Flexibility, based on your input data in the SIF/Tee dialog. The behavior will be similar to the automatic implementation of Appendix D.

Re: B31J for B31.3-2020 will it be native in CII now - 01/13/22 02:56 AM

CII v13 is planned for 2022Q2 (based on the list from november 2021).
PVElite 24 was planned for 2021Q4 and is just released.
Based on that scheme we can expect CII v13 at the end of 2022Q2/beginning of 2022Q3 (june/july 2022).

B31.3-2020 was issued June 18, 2021, becoming effective 6 months later. Updates will be incorporated in CII approx 1 year after release of the code.

What happened to the "software is always up-to-date with the latest code" approach?

(not trying to be harsh, but I see competitors pushing the market with the "we are up-to-date and CII is not" argument. And I know there is the willingness, especially with from the old Coade crew, to keep the software up-to-date).

C2 has had the ability to convert models to B31J since it was released (or soon thereafter), so I'm not sure what your complaint is?

Of course it'll be nice theres less work required to get there, but it was always possible to follow B31J if desired.

Re: B31J for B31.3-2020 will it be native in CII now - 01/16/22 04:20 AM

I know it is possible to implement B31J using FEATools. However I find that a time consuming way of converting your model, especially when I am dealing with a model which needs a lot of engineering to get the stresses and nozzle loads OK.
If it is native in CII I suspect it to work a lot faster.

My "complaint" as you call it is more general. CII isn't updated to the lastest version of the code when the code becomes effective, basically meaning we cannot say we have a code compliant calculation.
It is not a complaint by the way, just an observation that development is not up-to-speed with code updates.

Curious if there's a better known release date for v13 of Caesar? B31J translation is ok in small quantities, but is quite cumbersome on mass scale.

May I know when the next version of CII will be released? Is there any webinar to inform updates?

I also see that using FEATools is time-consuming to convert the model.
