B31.1 Hydrotest Allowable - 07/24/06 05:26 PM

I've noticed that in the hydrotest case there is no allowable. I've been informed that Sy must be entered for the material in order for Caesar to calculate the allowable. Is this a glitch in the program that Sy is not included in the material database?

Dear,

Sy will be more than 1.5 * St, St = B 31.1 allowable stress at test temp, say 40 C., having same allowable stress

Thus, make a copy of the input file, consider the hydrostatic test as sustained with water content & keep operating temperature for analysis at 40 C & make an additional loadcase as 0.67 * sust loadcase; if this second loadcase fails in stress, you need temporary supports for hydrotest. Remember to change all spring hangers to +Y supports with no friction.

regards,

No it is not a glitch. When the database was created (back in Version 3.24), we only incorporated the data (for what we considered the most common materials) that we needed to satisfy the Codes that the software supported. In the case of Sy, this value was only needed for the transportation codes.

Five years later, we added the capability to perform a "hydrotest" load case. We simply haven't had the time to revisit the Material Database and add this additional data for those materials where it wasn't needed before.
