Loops on straight long runs of cold pipe - 07/10/14 02:10 AM

Do you use loops/omega on straight long runs of cold pipe?
I am speaking of 300 meters of a 24" pipe, for example.
If I don't see any true thermal/expansion problem, like I have to limit displacement at the ends of the line because there is some equipment, I don't put loops in.
What's your opinion?

If you don't understand the need for loops, how would you "see any true thermal/expansion problem" or otherwise ??

Sorry, but I don't understand you...
I said that, if I have to contain displacements I use loops, some people say that it's better to insert them anyway, because it's good engineering practice, but usually don't give other "technical" reasons

That's a bit clearer.

I would suggest ... don't put loops in unless they are needed. Loops mean elbows .. expensive to buy, friction losses .. increasing running costs and extra supports .. expensive to install and for what, if not to control pipe expnsion / displacement?

If the ends are connected to the sensitive equipment I would put at least one loop since there is no warranty on the zero temperature difference between installation and the operating temperature for either thermal expansion or contraction to keep the loads under allowable.

When you say cold what is the value of it? What will be the atmospheric temperature during the construction of the piping? Will the pipe expose to the direct sun light? There may be others question can rise depending on the process, and its behavior on the piping?

Brainstorm first on process and the conditions that you have, put all the variables together and decide what to do?
