TRUNNION CHECK CALCULATIONS ON STRAIGHT RUN PIPE & ON BEND - 05/31/13 06:02 AM

Hello Everyone,

Iam preparing trunnion check calculation sheet, iam following KELLOG book. What I observed is, they focused only on Trunnion connected to straight run pipe.

if i follow the same formulaes for trunnion connected to elbow also,. for calculating local stresses and allowable formulaes. is this OK or NOT??

i seen some posts already in this forum, but they did based on some other codes. if i want to follow only KELLOG for both trunnion on BENDS & STRAIGHT RUN. what to do??

PVP129 addresses trunions on elbows. Your other alternative is FEA.

1. PVP 129? Is this a code. Can u please Elobrate..

2. In the view of criticality, which one likely fails more, whether trunnion on elbow or trunnion on straight run ?

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a study on this in 1998 that is free online: “Stress Indices for Elbows with Trunnion Attachments.”

TR-107453 is not based on Kellogg, but on modifications to nuclear code equations that cover tee-pattern trunnion attachments, ASME Code Cases N-391 and N-392.

http://www.epri.com/abstracts/Pages/ProductAbstract.aspx?ProductId=TR-107453

Abstract:
“Trunnions on elbows are generally used as supports and are also used in some applications as anchors. The qualification of trunnions is an important item in the design and fitness-for-service of many piping systems. This report provides equations, based on experimental and test data, for determining the stress indices, B and C, and the flexibility factor, k, for elbows with hollow circular cross-section attachments (trunnions). The report contains explicit modifications to ASME Code Cases 391 and 392 for qualification of trunnions on pipe. It also provides flexibility equations for a more accurate evaluation of these configurations.”

Thank u, I read that paper also
1.But iam using only Kellog method, in that I didnt found any details abt trunnion on elbow. Any factor we can use for elbow in loads,
Experts pls reply

2.Pvp_129 is what.?
