I am looking for some reasonable number for the tank settlement that the civil designer might use as his design basis.

In other words, what is a reasonable value for the max. settlement that will not create huge problems for piping design?

My civil designer is requesting such data for foundation design.

Replies will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try to limit the predicted (total) shell settlement to 12 inches maximum. In doing so, coupled with hooking up the piping after hydro-testing the tank, will result in a manageable, vertical displacement of less than 6 inches for the pipe stress engineer to contend with.

Tank settlement is basically concerned with soil settlement. Civil engineer itself should do this. Anyway check soil report. I hope in soil report you will find out maximum soil settlement that can occur in the respective area.

Dear shorustress,

Tank settlement is allowed uniformely around periperiy if not exceeded the code limit between points (3m). In respect of piping design for tank connection, we cannot limit the tank settlement.

Normally the piping designer will consider bellows near tank or spring supports near nozzle to take care of any tank settlement.

I hope I understood your question.
