Dear fellow designers,

I would like to know whether PVElite computes calculations for cluster of nozzles at the dish head or otherwise.

My case:
-I have a cluster of 3 nozzles of my vessel head (2:1 SE head).
-2" in size for all 3 nozzles.
-No reinforcement required for each of the nozzle during individual analysis.
-nozzle distance (center-line to center-line) is 140mm apart.
-nozzles are in a straight line
-UG-36 (c)(3)(d) (ASME 2010) states that: "no two unreinforced openings, in a cluster of three or more unreinforced openings........... for doubly curved shells and formed or flat heads, 2.5(d1+d2)

I have tested out PVElite for 2(two) openings, and I know PVElite does check for clashes and minimum distance between 2(two) openings.

It does not, however, check for 3(three) nozzles as per UG-36 (c)(3)(d).

Can anymore please advice on this? Whether my finding is true or otherwise?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Best Regards)

Hello Han

You are correct, in that no two nozzles may share a common area of the excess shell/head thickness. However, in PV ELite there is provision to limit the credit area for each nozzle, thus reducing the amount of excess area (diameter) that the shell/head excess thickness can be included in the reinforcement for A1.

In the nozzle dialogue screen, look for a field called: 'Limits [Diameter | Thickness]'. Just fill in the leftmost field with the reduced diameter.

Thank you very much Mr Delaforce.

Looks like it's back to manual calculations form e on this one.

Hello Han

I am interested how you intend to do hand calculations.

Mr. Han,

As per description of your problem, you can resolve the same in PV Elite. Why do you want to adopt manual calculation and for what?

You can send me your PV Elite file at "theculminates@yahoo.com" if you don't find any solution.

Thanks.
