The gust effect factor G is computed per IS-875 (Part 3 ) 1987 per paragraph 8.3. The equation for G is [1.0 + gfr * (B * (1 + phi)² + (Sope * Eope) / ßope)**½]. As you can see G is a function of several variables and graphs including figures 8, 9, 10 and 11. Experience had shown that this factor is very conservative and can increase wind loads by a factor of 2 or more. When designing tall vessels, this may be overly conservative. This calculation as you may have noted is optional. You can use the wind load scalar to increase the wind load by a factor that is agreeable to all parties who have an interest in the vessel.
