I have a problem with PVElite Circumferential joint efficiency consideration.
I modeled a cylinder with longitudinal joint efficiency = 1.0 and circumferential joint efficiency =0.3 and I expected, UG-27 C-2 formulation is used for cylinder thickness calculation (cir. joint eff. Less than one half of lon. joint eff.) but PVElite consider UG-27 C-1 fot this calculation. According to ASME UG-27 C-2 formulation give me larger thickness.
How PVElite consider cir. joint eff.??

Dear Hamid,

You are quite correct, PV Elite does not consider the longitudinal stress equation to determine the required thickness in the "Internal Pressure Report". This is because the magnitude of the hoop stress is about twice that of the longitudinal stress.

If your vessel model has a support (skirt etc), the longitudinal stress due to internal pressure will be computed with the other longitudinal stresses.

Please check the circumferential efficiency of 0.3, it sounds a bit on the low side.

I quote Hamid:
"..circumferential joint efficiency =0.3 and I expected..."
en of quote..

My comments is:
1/- E could not be that low, see UW 2,11,12..
2/- E Longitudinal could be governing in some instances ( tall column with low pressure..)
