Dear ALL

I have query for saddle support allowable stress.

In PV Elite I modeled one shell ( Considering joint efficency of shell as 0.85 spot RT, Material SA 516 Gr 70) ), & put saddle support. In output of saddle support,
PV Elite has considered allowable stress for Long. stress (S1, S2, S3, S4) as 1406 Kg/cm2.
Actaully as per ASME Div-2 code para. 4.15.3.3, allowable stress for S1 to S4 shall be E*S, Where E =Joint efficency of shell & S= allowable stress of shell.
Here In my model, E=0.85 & S=1406 Kg/cm2 , So allowable stress shall be 0.85*1406 = 1195 Kg/cm2. But PV Elite is considering allowable stress with considering E=1.

PV Elite output is attached herewith for reference.

Hi Sajit,
I think the circ efficiency at the plane of saddle and at the mid span shall be 0.85 (attached pdf shows it as 1), which you need to update in saddle input dialogue box.

Thanks for reply

Few days back,Same question we have asked to PV Elite & they have replied " Circ. efficiency at the plane of saddle and at mid span shall be 1 at all time except when welded seam is coming in saddle support."

Thats correct. The term efficiency is only for weld quality ( and based on NDT carried out). Hence it is applicable when you are evaluating stresses in the weld.
