I know this is not related to piping stress analysis but can be adopted to a pipe trunnion support subjected to high temperature by putting an insulation at some portion of inside end of the trunnion with a plate to take advantage of the radiation inside the trunnion from the wall of pipe thus thermal gradient is minimized and therefore minimizes the thermal stress.
Anyway, my question is on the page 2 of the document below. I think the figure shows reverse description where Fig. 1a is with hotbox (air pocket) and Fig. 1b is without hotbox (no air pocket).

Please correct me if I'm misinterpreting the two figures.
