Hi

I am working as a stress engineer in one of the leading EPC companies. I just found out that in couple of load cases 3D Max intensity is greater than the allowable stress. Still the model is passed. If 3D max intensity is not a code stress then why CAESAR II is calculating the value? B31 codes, as far as I know is based on 2D stresses. But is there any importance of calculating 3D stresses?

Different piping codes have their own methods of evaluating pipe stress. CAESAR II applied those rules.
But in addition, CAESAR II calculates a general, "text book" stress. That general stress has no defined limit in the Codes. Your 3-D mas stress intensity is this general stress. Use it as you wish.
