HI

what is the significant of giving guide near to the tied expansion joint (rubber)
what iam thinking is if we provide a guide near to the expansion joint we can not utilize the benefits(Flexibility) of using expansion joint,,

i red some where providing guide near to expansion joint for protecting expansion joint collapse

these are contradicting please correct me the proper support near to the expansion joint

Why locate a guide ? To control pipe movement.

Why would an EJ collapse ? Not sure what you mean by 'collapse'.

It is good practice to locate guides either side of an un-restrained axial EJ. Is that what you mean ?

One guide close to a tied EJ might control lateral movement one side of the joint, whilst allowing the other side to deflect.

Think carefully about what you want a joint to do, and what you don't want, then restrain it accordingly. Each situation is different and there are few absolute rules.

Fundamental rule ... An error in EJ design will quickly turn into a plant failure.

hi Mr.moverz thanks 4 quick reply

our client has specific requirement to use tied Expansion joint near pump suction and also they want to provide a Rest+ Guide (Z+Y) supporting close to this bellow to protect the bellow from seismic force as this plant is situated in high seismic zone.

my question is tied expansion bellow we are using here to absorb the lateral forces acting on the pump nozzle if i provide a rest+ guide close to this bellow, will it work properly? or advice me what is the suitable support to be provided near to the Tied expansion joint?

If you supoort and guide your tied bellows it will serve only to de-couple the pipe and pump in a seismic event I guess.

Maybe you want a guide with a gap bigger than normal lateral operating displacement.

It is also another situation when you have a guide near the bellow. When it is an axial bellow between a tank and the pump suction and the limit rods are only as a suplimentary safety measure. For any other situation, as MoverZ specified, is a nonsense. Post a sketch if you want a correct answer. Never assume that other people fully understand the exact situation only having few information.
