Dear friends,

Process department provides the flow regime as annular or bubble, does it mean mixed flow exists inside pipe and the piping to be analyzed and supported to resist the force?

If so, for calculating the force, the density of mixed fluid only to be considered not the liquid density. Is it correct?

Please somebody clarify.

In brief

Mainly we can classify two phase flow in three categories

1. segregated flow : In this type of two phase flow both gas & liquid phase are continuous e.g. Annular Flow , stratified flow , wave flow

2. Distributed Flow : One phase is continuous & other phase is discontinuous like Mist or dispersed flow , in which gas phase is continuous .

I can say these two flows are not so much critical (except in case of high velocity ) .Normally they does not have high momentum so generate very small force.

The third two phase is intermittent flow , in which both Gas & Liquid phase are discontinuous .some times liquid phase is dominant & some time vapour phase dominant .
In that the condition become critical when some liquid lumped mass stucked in a passage & high velocity vapour phase accelerate it so the lumped mass attain a very high velocity & when this strike on elbow create a force by the change in the high momentum .

For this type of flow we use the liquid density for calculating the Impact force .
