Rigid elements are drawn based on the diameter specified on the element spreadsheet. Is this different from the attached pipe diameter?

Well, Mr.Richard, please see below picture done by C5.1.
no element is sheleted by rigid element.

You are right, the rigid element is based on the element diameter.

But in C5.1, there is no view effect on element connected rigid element since the both end size of rigid element is no expanding. In C5.3,the both end size of rigid element is expanded and bigger than same size pipe. So if some element is connected on end of rigid element, they will be shelted by expanded end.

In 5.3, flanges OD are bigger as graphics (do not know why they changed).

I don't think that this can be changed but you can use "Translucent object" option and you will be able to see also the elements that now you are not able to see.
