Hello All,

I called sypris.com about a year ago when Dave Diehl noted that he had bought a copy of the Tube Turns book, Piping Engineering, and the person I talked with told me she didn't know anything about it but didn't think they had the book. I was glad to get a name and phone number from this thread (thanks Tim). I called (Gwen Creamer is no longer at that job) and the person with whom I spoke took my information and told me the book would be mailed that day. Total $35.00 and no shipping charge to this side of the pond. I am having them send it to me here in Idaho so I will have something to read after my work day (television is rot).

I know I have at least one old copy of the book in my basement archive but I have not seen it lately and I do not care to have to wrestle it away from the spiders.

Regards, John

Hello All,

I hold in my hand a pristine copy of the Tube Turns’ book “Piping Engineering” (sixth edition, 1986). It is almost overwhelming in its “newness”. Not a single coffee stain on ANY page (and no notes jotted in the margins). I was at least the third owner of my first copy of this book (the copy that now presumably resides in my basement with the spiders and other creepy crawly critters) and presumably the first owner had the same feeling of awe that I experience now. I will take great pleasure in again reading (slowly, over the next few weeks) all the fabled papers of Mr. Markl and his compeers. The photograph in the book of a quite young Mr. Everett C. Rodabaugh is alone worth the $35.00 price of admission.

I recommend it.

Sir,
Can you forward the email or phone number in 'Tube Turns' where you spoke for the book?

Hello Arijit,

I called the telephone number that Tim provided above:

Gwen.Creamer@sypris.com
502-774-6218

But I was told that Gwen Creamer is no longer the person responsible for books and such. I did not hear the name of the person I spoke with (I have a hearing deficiency) but she is responsible for having a copy of the book sent to me. I used a credit card for payment ($35.00). When the book arrived via mail, the person listed as the sender was James Herren (502-774-6227). I think you should try the first telephone number (the number that Tim provided - 502-774-6218).

There are ten papers/articles included in the back of the book:

Fatigue Tests of Welding Elbows vs. Mitre Bends - A.R.C. Markl, 1947

Fatigue Tests of Flanged Assemblies - A.R.C. Markl and H.H. George, 1949

Fatigue Tests of Piping Components - A.R.C. Markl, 1951

Piping Flexibility Analysis - A.R.C. Markl, 1953

Effects of Internal Pressure on Flexibility - E.C. Rodabaugh and H.H. George, 1956

Balanced Quality as a means of Attaining Maximum Economic Safety For Critical Piping - A.R.C. Markl, 1957

Fabricated Pressure Piping as Related to Nuclear Applications - J.J.Murphy, C.R. Soderberg, H.S. Blumberg, and D.B. Rossheim, 1957

On the Design of Bellows Elements - A.R.C. Markl, 1964

Why Branch Connections Fail - A.R.C. Markl, E.C. Rodabaugh and H.H. George, 1955

Tests of Pups Support "Bridging Effect" - E.C. Rodabaugh and H.H. George, 1959

The first half of the book includes typical properties of pipes, Pressure - Stress Ratios, Flow of Fluids, Line Expansion and Flexibility, and Layout Dimensions of Fittings and Flanges. This is an old book and some of the data is dated but any piping engineer will benefit from reading it cover to cover.

Regards, John.

John -

I gained a new copy too a few months back with a phone call.

Given your experience with power plants, I understand why you didn't mention the pleasant sound of crisp pages flowing past your fingers.

I'm surprised, however, that you didn't comment on the smell of 1986 printing ink that wafts forth from the pages...it would certainly discourge any spiders or creepy critters from homesteading anytime soon.

Well Mr. Luf,

All I will say about that remark is....Cheapskate is as cheapskate does.

Speaking of cheap as we seem to be (books and Cleveland in general) there are several classic welding structures books available from Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation in Cleveland. This list includes several books that most seasoned piping engineers seem to have on their shelves.

Go here:

https://ssl.lincolnelectric.com/foundation/store.asp?PID=16&cat=8

Design of Weldments, By Omer W. Blodgett,$22.00

Design of Welded Structures, By Omer W. Blodgett,$15.00

Tubular Steel Structures, Theory & Design By Dr. Troitsky $24.00

Be careful of the Troitsky book, it is excellent in its content but over the years I have found many typographical errors, some of which are in the equations.

Even Mr. Luf could afford those prices (I assume he actually PAID for his copies of these books).

Regards, John

An update on this. I tried the e-mail given by Breen Sir and I was directed to following contact. If somebody is interested to get the Tube Turn book, contact:

Tammy Griffin | Product Specialist

Sypris Technologies, Inc.

502-774-6242 phone

tammy.griffin@sypris.com

I received the one. Careful if you order from outside US. They send it by UPS and UPS charged $32 extra for customs/brokarage. But 9 papers still worth it.

Contact is still the same as of today 4/29/10. Spoke with Tammy - the price (for Piping Engineering) is now $50.00 including shipping (shipping within the continental U.S. is free). Should be here in a week. I got the impression they sell a fair amount - like one per day or two.
