A pipeline is connected to an equipement. During SUS condition, the pipe is sitting on an Pipe Shoe. But when it went operation, the pipe is lifted leaving a gap of 23mm between the pipe shoe and the pipe.

Problem:

1) Owner is asking us to do an analysis and ask if they placed a spacer at the pipe shoe now, when the plant shut down, can this cause a problem. How can I model this in CAESAR II V5?

2) How can we resolved this problem? Somehow I think that placing a spacer is not a solution.

Please consider using Spring Hangers!

Tsk Tsk.... do a search on lift off in this forum and read some of the newsletters.... your design is ill considered and I doubt that you have considered the state of sustained stress in the hot case!  frown frown

Just spend 5 mins wiping spilt coffee of my computer after choking trying to laugh and breath at the same time.

I've also just been asked to keep the (laugh) noise down by my superior.

Great post
Great ideas.

Putting in a shim is not the same as making the shoe a support. A spring is probably required.

Check the hot case without the support.

Check a cold case (shut down condition) with a 23 mm displacement imposed at the shim location. See what load this places on the equipment. That should be sufficient to kill this bad idea.

If that is not sufficient to kill the idea, you will need to look at stress range between your hot condition and your new cold condition with the 23 mm displacement imposed by the shim.
