Does anyone come across this type of requirement.


"The Contractor shall also ensure that the transfer line does not impart any wind load on the primary
TLEs. Connecting the TLE outlet manifolds to the furnace casing plate with pivot supports is an
acceptable way to achieve this requirement. Pivot supports shall be designed to accommodate vertical
displacement of the TLEs. The Contractor shall confirm these displacements with the TLE Vendor during
detailed engineering and update the transfer line flexibility analysis as-necessary."

TLE= Transfer Line Exchangers. (Vertical Type)

What is pivot supports in this case?

Ask a mechanical engineer or the client

Sounds like a vertical guide which would allow the pipe to free rotate (i.e. pivot), as well as permit growth unhindered. Whether it be more complex than a simple U-bolt will be dependent on the end user.

Ask what their preferred vendor for pivot supports is.

Thanks for your opinion. You're idea make sense. I'm just puzzled by the word "pivot" supports which is not a common term for stress engineer. A vertical guide which allows rotation and translation in the vertical direction sounds good to isolate the TLE's from the wind load on main header.

Any other opinion is greatly appreciated.

Here's a guess...
It's what I would call a constant effort support.
A pivot support - the pivot works with the two moment arms, one length carrying load and the other compressing the spring.
Appropriate in accommodating large deflection but I don't get the wind connection.
I'd like to know.

These "pivot" supports may refer to roller/dresser couplings.

These are quite popular in some parts of the world particularly with tankages , FPSO etc.

I'm not sure but to me this suits the definition of "pivot".

Thanks for your ideas also. Anyway we'll just clarify this with client what they really mean by "pivot supports", so we will have a common understanding on the outcome of the design.
