Hi all

This is not a Caesar II question or even a Stress analysis query, but since some of you might have come across this problem, may be able to give some guidance.

We have a existing 36"NB LNG header and as part of the modifications to the pipework we need to have 16" branch connection on this line. Due to the layout constraints only possible location to have the bracnh is at a butt welded Tee.(See sketch attached). I am trying to find the code requirement on this type of connection and the restriction on the angle theta. (can it be 90 deg. or 45 deg.?).

There is no Code requirement for this, at least not in B31 codes ..... There are similar requirements to avoid overlapping reinforcment areas in adjacent same axis connections on, for example a manifold, but that is not really relevant.

I would recommend a decent FE analysis to prove your design, and clearly 90 deg would be less likely to cause problems than 45 deg.

This is an ideal application for FE-Pipe software, from Paulin Research Group.
