When undertaking an assessment to PD 8010-2 the allowable strength (sigma A) assessed to is simply taken as the yield strength x design factor. Clause 6.4.2.1 (sigma A = sigma y x fd)

In the CII help menu it is stated as the "Specified Mimimum Yield Stress" SMYS.

However, when I read the code, the last paragraph of clause 6.4.1 suggests (to me anyway) that the sigma y should in fact be that taken at a specific temperatures.

The code text states 'Account should be taken of the variation of strength with temperature on the basis of verifiable test data appropriate to the materila under consideration'

Therefore, for the hoop stress check I'd personally use an allowable stress sigma A of 128.4 N/mm^2 (0.6 x 214) rather than 144 N/mm^2 (0.6 x 240) (A333 gr 6 @150 degC taken from ASME II part D)

Q. Although my approach is conservative (I suppose), is my interpretation of the code at fault?

Regards.
