Dear Members,

We are reviewing a Stress Analysis for an Aboveground / buried pipeline. The design parameters are 100 deg. C, 20 barg, 24” – Sch 40, API5L Gr.B Pipe.

In stress analysis report, it is specified 100 deg. C for the aboveground pipeline and 35-40 deg. C at the point where the aboveground to belowground changes and to the buried portion.

My question is why this temperature change must be made for the aboveground to belowground pipeline. Since the fluid temperature remains same (approximately) for the above ground and below ground pipeline. I am not able to understand the concept behind this.

Is this is a general practice to provide the different temperatures for the aboveground and buried pipeline.

Please clarify.
