DEAR CAESAR EXPERTS,

Sir I am doing stress analysis in plant piping for oil and gas projects.

I am finding one primary difference in SIF between ASME B31.3 and ASME B31.1 apart from so many other changes,that in B31.1 their is not much difference between inlet and outlet SIF's " i=0.9" we are using.

But in case of B31.3 inlet and outlet SIF,s are distinguished and their values are i(i)=0.75 and i(o)=0.9.

Sir I wanted to know the basics behind this!
why this difference exists? Even though I understand the one code is for power piping another for process piping.

Is it the maximum pressue case stands for the type of SIF values in power piping? and

Is it pressure and temperature cases stands for the type of SIf in Process piping.

Sir I have red the AMC Markel paper published in 1955,and Paulinah's reaserch paper's also.But cannot distinguish from them about this difference.

early reply will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Dear Deb,
First, to clarify terminology. In the current context:
i = "In-plane", not "inlet"
o = "Out-of-plane", not "outlet"
These terms relate to the direction of the applied moments. See Figures 319.4.4A and 4B in B31.3.
The magnitude of stress in a component depends upon the direction of the applied moment. For example, an in-plane bending moment on an elbow will create a higher stress in an elbow than will an out-of-plane bending moment. B31.3 recognizes this difference by specifying different SIFs for the two moments. B31.1 takes a more simplified (and conservative) approach by specifying only one SIF (the greater of the two) for both moments (actually, the SIF applies to all three moments as B31.1 also intensifies torsional moments).

Sir, yes it was a printing mistake for writing ii for inplane inplace of Inlet and io for outplane inplace of outlet.

I do agree with you.
thanks for the correction.

My question is this only why ASME B31.3 uses Two SIFs and ASME B31.1 uses one the maximum one.In my information In ASME B31.3 We have Chapter 9 is for High pressure piping But even though Special Sif not mentioned..

question 1.
a)Is it the high pressure plays the role for taking maximum SIF?,if yes.
then how?
B)If No ,then what is that specific parameter which leads to this correction.

please answer the query.
