Well,

As the title suggests really,

Have you ever had a situation where you have spotted errors or mistakes in your work(Calcs) either on site or in the office and thought "oh $h1t!!!"

I was on site last week inspecting a HTF system which was *cough* analyised by my somebody in our group........
I spotted a rest under a horizontal pipe which was attached to a nozzle going into the top of a Cryogenic holding tank which is HUGE
i got that butterfly feeling in my stomach and the twitching ar&e!!!!!!

The contraction rates once cold could have ripped the nozzle off.
So off i run to the Site supers to fix said support, followed by much investigation at the office to find the source of the error.

Orginisation is EVERYTHING!!!!!

I haven't yet made a mistake which has caused re-work or damage, but surely its only a matter of chance and time.

Your thoughts.........

Good catch! Site visits are valuable things, too bad many clients do not want to spend the money for them.

As Forest Gump said &%it happens....

We all make mistakes (Yes Me 2 J. Breen) despite our OCD natures, hopefully somebody catches them along the way. The value of competent checking is never to be underestimated...

Good Catch.... Brilliant! Ask the Boss for a raise, or bonus, at the least some Futbol tickets!

i let a trainee do the calc.
the task was really a simple case of good supporting as the temperatures are only -25c but the pumps needed coding
Because our company deems this not stress critical, we (stress) do not usually review them.

I normally insist all work is checked, but the nature or the layout meant it was nearly inpossible to do wrong.
I did a visuall check and it looked alright, but i missed the support.

Lesson learnt.

We learn only from mistakes. Everybody makes them. Most difficult to find are those you make yourself.

On average a good professional checker finds only 80% of the mistakes.

I have a habbit of finding mistakes. So I told my customer yesterday that they can call me from now on Mr. BadNews cool

Indeed. I had a client with a tank of which the nozzle kept breaking. I asked if there were any extra forces on the nozzle, deriving from the pipes or whatever. Absolutely not according to the client. I re-calculated the nozzle and it was fine. Untill I visited the plant and saw a 80m long pipe running horizontally from a fixed point to a 90degr. bend and that bend directly attached to the nozzle. With a dT of 70degrees that gave "some" extra stress on the nozzle.
Problem solved. cool
