I have a Pipe spec for emergancy relief lines.
This spec dictates the use of stub ends.
Due to high out of balance forces, i normally require the use of slipons as an alternative.

The client is demanding stub ends. (mss sp43)

am i being silly, or are these stub ends really not suitable for high stress situations.

(not strictly a Caesar question, but WTF)..

Well...

In B31.3 land...

308.2.1 which does not say thou shall not use but implies that "slip on flanges" are from "strong"

308.2.4 Flanges for severe cyclic service clearly calls out WNF

A SIF of 1.6 is indicated for lap joints witha B16.9 stub end.... so from an analysis point of view you should mark up yur model at least amd maybe greater than a factor of 1.6
