We are currently analysing one tank farm where settlement is high. (In service- post hydrotest). We have reached an agreement with the client to use expansion joints on nozzles to account for settlement. As there are some lines with little pressure client insisted on expansion joints and advised against use of non metallic hoses. Some people from client feel that gimble joints should be used and not single tied. Any suggestions/ remarks?
Regards,
Sunil

Do some studying of the EJMA standards or the engineering section of a vendor catalog for specifics concerning the use of expansion joints.... also use the search function of this web site

I am surprised you need an expansion joint. Even for large settlements, you can avoid expansion joints by having first spring support away from tank nozzle after a bend or two. Usually tank inlet/outlet nozzles have a large "rat pad" and they take heavy loads. Refer API 650.

I fully agree with Ravi. Load on tank nozzle due to differential settlement can easily be taken care of by use of spring. Why use an expansion joint?

You can also include the first support on the tank's concrete base ant his support will settle with the tank
