Is there an error in Table 1 Sketch 2.3 Branch SIF in-plane?

The VBA version of this seems to include for t/T <1 then t/T=1.
This is also quoted in section 3.7 and indicates that note 10 has been revised.

There is no mention of this in our copy of ASME STP PT-073.

In the above posting, Sketch 2.3 and Note 10 are two different screen captures from different pages in STP-PT-073.

Hi Richard,

That's what mine says but Appendix B Table 1. Sketch 2.3 does not state that.

Table 1 Sketch 2.6
Iib doesn't state anything.
Iob (t/T<0.85 use t/T=0.85)

There is nothing in Note 10 (following Table 1) that states t/T=1 for 2.3 Iib.

I'm assuming that this is an omission.

Paul

Paul,

From T. Paulin at PRG:

The limit on t/T, as shown in Table 1 Sketch 2.3 that you’ve included above should be present. In my version of STP-PT-073 the note is in the table just like it is in the version that is posted above. I suppose there may be a copy of the Sketch 2.3 in STP-PT-073 that doesn’t include the note somewhere in the document. I’ll make a note in the event we issue a revision to STP-PT-073 to go back and look for it.

Hopefully when the new B31J is released it will put all this to bed. There have been a few small adjustments to the final set of guidelines – and ultimately, B31J will contain the formal set of the equations.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Richard,

That's cleared that up.
It is a shame to find such an error in an ASME paper. I look forward to the revised B31J.

Paul
